The Subaru Forester has been a capable off-road vehicle for years. Drivers enjoy the Forester off-road because of its superior ground clearance and handling. The Forester’s Wilderness trim builds upon that ground clearance and makes the SUV more trail-ready than ever before.

The Subaru Forester typically has about 8.7 inches of ground clearance. According to an off-roading buying guide prepared by Edmunds, vehicles with 8.5 inches of ground clearance and above are ideal for off-roading. The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness has a whopping 9.2 inches of ground clearance.

Ground clearance is especially important to off-road vehicles because it increases capability and decreases risk. Off-roading can be very dangerous for drivers and their vehicles.

Ground clearance affects approach and departure angles and ultimately determines whether a vehicle can overcome an obstacle or not. The more treacherous the terrain is, the more useful high ground clearance is. Aside from increased capability getting over hills, through mountainous regions, and even climbing rocks, ground clearance also keeps major mechanical components safe off-road.

Off-roading can cause serious damage to the undercarriage of a vehicle. Damage sustained from off-roading could potentially cost drivers hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs. High ground clearance gives drivers the peace of mind knowing that it’s unlikely that rough terrain will be close enough to the bottom of their vehicle to cause any serious damage.
