GM’s truck sales up 18%, overtaking F-150
GM just shook up the truck world. In 2024, GM’s truck sales grew 4% overall, with Sierra sales jumping 9.2%. That was enough to outsell Ford’s F-Series in total full-size truck sales. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra had solid years, while the Colorado and Canyon surged in the midsize market. But Ford still has an ace up its sleeve: the Maverick, a compact, unibody truck GM doesn’t compete with. So, who really won the 2024 truck war? Let’s dig into the numbers.
GM’s full-size trucks outsold Ford’s F-Series
Ford sold 765,649 full-size F-Series trucks in 2024, up 1.98% from the previous year. But GM’s combined Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra sales hit 884,998—beating Ford by over 119,000 trucks. The Silverado accounted for 552,836 sales, while the Sierra added 322,946. That’s a 3.95% growth for GM’s full-size pickups, outpacing Ford’s F-Series gains.

The Sierra saw the biggest jump, increasing 9.2%, while the Silverado stayed flat with a slight 0.42% dip. Meanwhile, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV combined for 9,216 sales—a small but growing slice of the market.
Ford’s Maverick kept it in the overall lead
While General Motors dominated the full-frame truck category, Ford still sold more total pickups—thanks to the Maverick. The unibody compact truck moved over 150,000 units, helping Ford stay on top. The Ranger also saw solid growth, hitting 51,591 sales.
GM, on the other hand, focused on body-on-frame trucks. It sold 98,012 Colorados, up 37.89%, and 38,215 Canyons, up 70.16%. Impressive growth, but not enough to offset Ford’s Maverick sales.
Who really won the truck war?
It depends on how you count. If you compare every truck sold, Ford still holds the overall lead. But if you only count body-on-frame trucks, GM comes out on top.
Ford’s Maverick is a unique success story, offering truck buyers something smaller and more affordable. GM has no direct competitor in the compact truck space. If the Maverick’s success continues, GM may need to respond.
The takeaway? The truck market is changing
GM dominated full-size truck sales, but Ford’s compact Maverick gave it the edge in overall truck numbers. Midsize trucks are booming, with GM’s Colorado and Canyon posting massive gains. The question now is: will GM build a Maverick rival? If it doesn’t, Ford’s lead may only grow.
