That’s right, this big, heavy, massive, off-road truck can rocket to highway speeds from a standstill in only three seconds. Move over Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche, there’s a new speed demon in town, and it’s the GMC Hummer EV.

What is the Watts to Freedom feature of the Hummer EV?

GMC gives us this special feature as the launch control for this amazing truck. Normally, you wouldn’t find a launch control feature on a pickup truck, but the Hummer EV isn’t any normal truck.

The GMC Hummer EV is a big and strong electric truck built to show us what EVs can do. We’ve seen photos of this big pickup on the trails, going over rocks and fording through rivers, but have we seen it leave sports cars in the dust? Not yet.

What happens when you engage this feature in the electric Hummer?

Once you engage the Watts to Freedom mode, the adaptive air suspension lowers the ride height by two inches. A unique animation of sights and sounds appears on the screen to offer a virtual countdown to the launch.

At the end of the countdown, the truck takes off, sprinting to sixty mph in 3.0 seconds while pushing you into your seat with 0.74 g of rearward force.

Are 9,000 pounds heavy for a pickup truck?

Yes, it certainly is. Much of the weight of the GMC Hummer EV can be found in the Ultium battery packs residing in the floor. By comparison, a GMC Sierra 3500 HD dually with the Duramax diesel engine weighs in at 8,355 pounds. The electric Hummer has an official weight of 9,046 pounds.

The battery pack that gives this electric truck so much weight is a 24-module, double-stacked, 200-kW battery. The estimated driving range under normal highway conditions is 350 miles. This is the largest battery offered in any production vehicle and it has a respectable range, making it easy to admire this GMC truck.

Does the GMC Hummer EV have a complicated torque calculation?

Yes, in fact, the torque of this electric truck has been described as controversial. The overall horsepower for the three-motor GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 with the EV3X powertrain is 1,000. The torque with the Watts to Freedom feature engaged is estimated at 1,000 lb-ft in the motors. GM tells us the torque multipliers impact this number to increase torque to 11,500 lb-ft at the wheels.

While some might dispute the claim of such a high torque number, it’s impossible to dispute the acceleration of this big truck when it races to sixty mph.

Should you buy the Hummer EV?

If you want a big, powerful, and fun electric truck to drive on and off the roads, the Hummer EV is an exceptional choice. Of course, you’ll pay a lot to get a lot out of this truck. The least expensive model is the EV2 which starts at $79,995, while the Edition 1 version costs $112,595.
