General Motors vehicles (Buick, GMC, Chevrolet, and Cadillac) can get annoyed at their fuel gauges. The digital dashboard shows you exactly how much fuel you have left–and even an estimate for how many miles it’ll take you–until you get below 35 miles. At this point, it just flashes “LOW.”

This is likely a way to urge you to fill up ASAP. General Motors’ range estimates aren’t precise, and the automaker would hate for you to run out of gas based on its range estimate. But that said, automakers such as Ford display their total range estimate all the way to 0 miles/0%. Luckily, GM owners have discovered a hack.

According to GM Authority, you can just wait until your range dips below 35 miles and swaps to displaying “LOW.” Then get out your phone. If you have GM’s “myBrand” app, you can see range estimates until the tank is truly dry.

What’s the “myBrand” app? It’s just the myBuick/myGMC/myChevrolet/myCadillac app. In truth, they’re all just branded versions of the same app. In the app, go to the “My Vehicle” section. This will show you your fuel level as a percentage, and a range, until both hit zero. Want to know more? You can see the MyChevrolet app in action in the video embedded below:
