General Motors makes some of the best cars to buy. This has been the case for decades despite some issues along the way. However, automotive excellence doesn’t exempt automakers from experiencing hardship and adjusting to modern trends. Sadly, GM has another round of layoffs, impacting several blue-collar workers worldwide. This comes as the company seeks ways to restructure its workforce to emphasize efficiency. 

GM has another round of layoffs

According to The Associated Press, GM announced another round of layoffs on November 15th. This time, the layoffs affected about 1,000 workers worldwide. Notably, the employees were also notified about the future of their positions the same day, with white-collar workers being the most affected group. The company is taking this step as it’s trying to cut costs and remain a strong competitor in the global automotive market. 

Regarding the GM layoffs, the company released the following statement. It reads, “We need to optimize for speed and excellence. This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities.” 

It’s important to note that automakers are not only struggling with profits but also attempting to determine where to best focus their efforts. They’re balancing their workforce between updating gas-powered vehicles and delving into the world of EVs. This means some automotive plants are being repurposed to manufacture all-electric cars. This most recent round of GM layoffs is partially a result of these changes. 

It’s also important to note that GM laid off about 1,000 salaried employees in August.
