You expect to find a few things in your garage. Sure, you’ll find your car, your tools, and perhaps some storage. However, you likely don’t expect to find a giant snake swinging from your garage door as you open it.

An Australian woman nearly jumped out of her skin after a giant snake came swinging off of her moving garage door

An Australian woman in the northwestern state of Queensland received quite a surprise when she opened her garage door. In a social media video, the woman walked up to her electric garage door as it slowly opened. However, as the garage door finished its journey, a carpet python swung out toward her like Indiana Jones on a whip.

While a giant snake might seem like a top-tier predator, the carpet python tends to hide during daylight hours. These constrictors are nocturnal, meaning they may seek a cozy, dark “hide” while the sun is out. It stands to reason, then, that a giant snake like the carpet python would hide in a garage to escape Queensland’s bright daytime sun. It’s just so unfortunate for the homeowner that the large python chose her garage door as a hide.

Humorously, many commenters admit they would have surrendered the home to the large snake. “Nope. Goodbye house,” one commenter said. Another viewer echoed the sentiment by exclaiming “BIG ole nope rope!!!” Big is right, too. A carpet python can grow beyond four meters (13.1 feet). And of course, some commenters highlighted the Australia of it all. “I knew it was Australia before I read the title.”

Now, I was fortunate enough to spend the better part of a year in Australia. Consequently, one of the first things I learned about in the Northern Territory is the multitude of potentially deadly critters. For instance, the death adder, a fearsome and highly venomous elapid snake, is one of the deadliest snakes in the world. In addition to the death adder, the king brown snake can exceed eight feet in length, per Australia Wide First Aid. Hardly what you’d want to find swinging from your garage door.
