Many automakers like Ford and Stellantis are cutting jobs due to declining sales. Now General Motors is making cuts despite gaining near-record profits. About 1,000 workers are slated to be laid off.

General Motors plays offense by cutting 1,000 jobs for efficiency

Recently, General Motors announced that it will cut roughly 1,000 salaried positions to improve its operating efficiency. This has been referred to as a normal course of business.

The Yuma Desert Proving Grounds in Arizona, which is where drivers test trucks, SUVs, and cars in hot-weather conditions is also closing. This impacts about 33 jobs.

Also, the Durability, Corrosion, and Teardown departments at the Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan are closing. This impacts about 44 United Auto Workers (UAW) hourly employees and 16 salaried workers.

Most of the 1,000 jobs are being cut from the GM Global Technical Center in Warren. This is where the Cadillac CELESTIQ is manufactured. About 507 people assigned to the Tech Center are being let go.

Some of the employees are represented by the UAW, and a spokesperson shared that the union will be fighting the layoffs.

Mike Booth, the UAW vice president, explained that General Motors is trying to cut about 50 UAW jobs while making record profits. It will fight for the laid-off members with the full force of their contact.

According to the Detroit Free Press, GM spokesman, Kevin Kelly, shared that to win in this competitive market, GM needs to optimize for speed and excellence.

This involves operating with efficiency, ensuring that it includes the right team structure while focusing on top business priorities.

As a result, there have been a small number of team reductions, but it’s grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead the industry while moving forward.

Reportedly, those being let go will receive a severance package based on their years of service and local legal requirements.
