Some of us picture semi-trucks or massive commercial pickups when we think of trucks powered by a diesel engine. That’s not the case with the Chevrolet brand. All four trucks available to you offer the option of a diesel engine. Two levels of these trucks are on the Gear Junkie list for pickups with the best fuel economy.

Chevy Colorado

The midsize Chevy Colorado ranks ninth for efficiency among trucks. This list isn’t limited to trucks with diesel engines, but that’s what this Colorado offers. The 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder model gives you 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque at only 2,000 rpm. The transmission is a six-cylinder automatic which aids this truck in returning 22 mpg combined.

This version of the Chevy Colorado gives you a diesel truck with 7,700 pounds of towing, a payload rating of 1,490 pounds, and room for improvement. If the transmission were an eight, nine, or ten-speed model, the Colorado could be higher on the list.

Chevy Silverado 1500

The half-ton version of the Chevy truck models gives you better fuel mileage. In fact, the Silverado ranks fourth on the list, behind only the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel, Ford Maverick, and Rivian R1T. All three of those trucks have size and powertrain advantages, especially the Rivian, which is an electric truck.

The Silverado 1500 gives you a diesel Chevy truck with the 3.0-liter Duramax six-cylinder engine that makes 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. at 1,500 rpm. That torque number equals the largest V8 the Silverado offers, making this an impressively strong truck to drive. The ten-speed automatic transmission aids the efficiency level of this Silverado.

With this Chevy truck, you’ll have 24 mpg combined, 13,000 pounds of towing, and 2,210 pounds of payload in the 4×4 version.

Recent reports from GM Authority show us a new Chevy Silverado HD out on the roads testing. These new models should arrive for the 2024 model year. The testing versions were seen pulling trailers with current HD models on the back. While we don’t know much about the styling upgrades due to the camouflage used, we do know the expected power numbers.

The new 2024 Silverado HD models should use an updated version of the largest Duramax diesel engine in the lineup. Current models have a 6.6-liter turbocharged version giving us 445 horsepower and 910 lb.-ft. of torque. We don’t know if the new versions will have larger engines or only an upgraded power number, but the expected return is 500 horsepower and 1,100 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Chevy Silverado 3500 HD with the Duramax diesel engine can tow up to 36,000 pounds. Imagine what it will do with more power coming from the engine.

Is Duramax better than Cummins?

The Cummins diesel engine is what you find in the Ram lineup of trucks. According to Pro Source Diesel, the Duramax 6.6-liter engine offers more horsepower than the 6.7-liter model in the Ram trucks, with 445 to 400 in this category. That said, the Cummins model returns 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque to the 910 for the Duramax. This could be why we see new heavy-duty Chevy trucks in testing.

Is it worth buying a diesel truck?

From what you can see here, the diesel-powered Chevy trucks give you an advantage in both power and efficiency. That’s the perfect combination when shopping or any truck. You will pay a higher price for a truck with a diesel engine, but these trucks historically last longer, pull heavier loads, and are more fuel-efficient. Isn’t that what you want out of your truck?
