2 reasons the Ford F-150 is so popular for thieves
Car theft is a significant issue for owners, and many are on high alert. This crime often involves stealing vehicles themselves, but it can also mean individual parts are the target. One of the most stolen vehicles happens to be the iconic Ford F-150. Naturally, this is one of the best trucks to buy, so this unfortunate title makes sense.
Here are two reasons why so many bad actors steal the Ford F-150.
Car theft isn’t just about stealing cars, as it includes individual parts from Ford trucks
Relay attack
One of the biggest reasons why Ford F-150 trucks are so easy for people to steal is technology. Of course, this is also true for most other modern vehicles. Many informed thieves or their associates can use what’s called a relay attack to boost the signal of the truck’s fob. Doing this makes the vehicle think the owner is the one starting it. This is just another way of saying people can “easily” hack into the Ford F-150.
The taillights are also targets
Recently, a man named Chris Pearce took to his TikTok account to highlight instances of car theft. Specifically, he says that Ford trucks are becoming significant targets for thieves searching for their taillights. He went on to say that Texas thieves have stolen more than $90k worth of Ford truck taillights since September. Of course, most modern taillights are advanced, but he says these have expensive backup sensors.
Regarding the instances of vehicle theft, Chris says this is leaving many Ford truck owners in a bind. Notably, replacement lights can start around $2,500 and can be as expensive as $6k. Sadly, this is one of the types of theft that locking your truck won’t stop, which is why it’s becoming such an issue. From the looks of the situation, it’s also relatively easy for people to steal these ultra-expensive lights.
Ford truck drivers do have some recourse to stop thieves. Various companies are now selling mechanisms to lock in taillights. One option is called LatchLid. Notably, the product description doesn’t say it stops theft but that it instead slows down thieves, which will hopefully deter them. It’s unfortunate that Ford truck owners have to take these measures, but it’s still best to try and preserve your investment.
Naturally, the popularity of the F-150 and other Ford trucks is also one of the biggest reasons it’s so popular for thieves. After all, the F-150 and the larger, heavy-duty variants are practically everywhere.
