Hot take, no one should be surprised that Ford is considering discontinuing one of its full-size trucks. The truck with an uncertain future isn’t even being built right now. Supplies are being conserved for the real money maker, the Ford F-150.

GASP! How shocking, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a rocky path forward. Ford Motor Company is considering sending this electric truck out to pasture.

I’m not exactly sure why this is so surprising as it seems like a smart move, in my humble opinion. While I have plenty of nice things to say about the F-150 Lightning, it does fall a bit short.

For example, it’s incredibly athletic, comfortable, and fun to drive. But the lack of heat pump in the earlier model years led to unexpected battery drainage and slower-than-expected charging times.

Also, towing a 5,000 lb camper with the Pro model drained the battery in about 10 minutes. Now the $7,500 federal tax credit is gone, making the $54,780 MSRP pretty steep.

A fire at Ford’s largest aluminum supplier plant led the company to deciding to stop producing the F-150 Lightning to save materials for the F-150 instead. According to the Wall Street Journal, Ford might not restart production.

It’s a money-losing truck, and Ford has lost $13 billion due to EVs since 2023. It sold 33,500 Lightning trucks in 2024 while selling 732,193 F-150 models. Ford CEO Jim Farley has shared that making money on large EVs is difficult and many automakers have canceled their plans.

Plus, Ford is working on a new EV truck that is expected to start for under $30,000. The F-150 Lightning was great for learning how to improve future models, though.
