Ford is recalling its 2025 Bronco SUV over faulty airbags. Passenger-side airbags on thousands of SUVs may become over-inflated during a crash and pose a serious safety risk to occupants. Ford’s airbag supplier–Joyson Safety Systems–discovered the issue with its hardware and passed the information along to Ford Motor Company.

An airbag presents a serious engineering challenge. It must inflate so fast that it prevents a vehicle occupant’s face from hitting the dashboard or steering wheel. But to keep from injuring the person, it is designed to begin deflating just before they strike it. According to Joyson, its airbags are at risk of having a plastic flange break off inside and block the active vent shut. This means the airbag can’t deflate as engineered and will be much stiffer when someone hits it.

Ford currently plans to recall 2,272 Broncos from the 2025 model year. It will replace these SUV’s airbags at a dealership for free. No word yet on how many other models have Joyson airbags, or whether Ford may have to expand the recall to cover additional Bronco model years. There are multiple other open recalls for the Bronco, including for failing child safety locks.

Curious if your vehicle is subject to a recall? You can always call your local dealership with your VIN handy to find out. You can also plug your VIN in at NHTSA.gov.
