The Blue Oval knows how to produce a great pickup truck. American automaker Ford Motor Company has produced some of America’s favorite pickup trucks for decades. U.S. News & World Report ranks the 2022 Ford Ranger as the fourth-best new compact truck behind the 2022 GMC Canyon, 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, and 2022 Honda Ridgeline respectively. Why is this Ford pickup truck ranked lower than GM and Honda trucks on this list of best compact pickup trucks?

This Ford pickup is far from the best compact truck on the market

  • Price: $25,500
  • Base Engine: 2.3-Liter Four-Cylinder, 270 Horsepower
  • MPG: 21 City, 26 Highway

The Ford Ranger is a compact pickup truck that has been in production since 1982. The midsize truck has evolved over the years but it has consistently provided great value for its price throughout different generations. Not every driver wants a huge Ford F-150. Sometimes, smaller trucks can get the job done just as well.

The Ford Ranger will come in five different trim levels including the exciting Tremor off-road trim. The 2022 Ford Ranger Tremor will start at around $41,000.

The Ford Ranger compact pickup truck has a peppy powertrain and plenty of standard safety features. Unfortunately, its cabin and tech are too basic to compete with rivals. The Ranger scored just 0.1 of a point less than GM trucks on U.S. News’ list.

General Motors produces great automobiles, but it’s rarely at the top of any truck vehicle segment. Ford trucks are often superior to GM trucks. So, why do the 2022 GMC Canyon and 2022 Chevrolet Colorado rank higher than the 2022 Ford Ranger on U.S. News & World Reports’ list?

Every compact truck on the list was scored out of 10. The 2022 Ford Ranger received a total score of 7.7. The 2022 GMC Canyon and 2022 Chevrolet Colorado both received a total score of 7.8. This is unsurprising because the Canyon and Colorado are essentially the same truck. Both compact trucks have less power and similar fuel economy to the 2022 Ford Ranger, so why does U.S. News favor the GM trucks?

Critics enjoy the GMC Canyon’s many engine options and driving dynamics. Reviews praise the Chevy Colorado’s handling and comfortable driver’s seat. In contrast, the Ford Ranger is criticized for its ride comfort on certain types of roads.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline rules the compact truck class

The Honda Ridgeline has consistently topped compact pickup truck rankings because of its unique design. It’s a unibody truck with SUV-like driving dynamics. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline rules the compact pickup truck class because it offers the utility of a pickup truck combined with the comfort and ride quality of an SUV.

The Ridgeline tops plenty of lists for best compact pickup truck, but not everyone is a fan of Honda’s pickup. Some dislike the Ridgeline because it lacks the towing capacity, off-road capability, and ruggedness of competitors.

If the Blue Oval wants the Ford Ranger to thwart compact GM trucks, it’ll have to update the pickup’s cabin and tech. Does the midsize Ford pickup truck provide enough value to be one of the best in its segment?
