Ford just dropped Mustang Mach-E prices. Automakers have been involved in an electric vehicle price war following price cuts by Tesla. The Mach-E is now more affordable than it has been in months. Is it time to get one?

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is an electrified small SUV model with the body of a family SUV and the spirit of a Mustang muscle car. It was met with skepticism when it first hit the scene. After getting acceptance from consumers and the industry, the small electric SUV ran into some reliability issues. Now, the Blue Oval is looking to save face and keep its EV competitive in its respective vehicle segment.

Tesla has its problems as a company, but its electric vehicles are taking over the world. The Model Y is currently the most popular electric vehicle in the industry. Its recent price reduction makes it even more appealing to consumers (though the decision baffles investors). It seems like Tesla is trying to price the competition out of the picture. Ford isn’t going down without a fight.

The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select base model now starts at $42,995. That’s a price reduction of $3K. Furthermore, the EV is eligible for a federal electric vehicle tax incentive of $3,750. That brings its price closer to $39,245. For the first time in months, the Mustang Mach-E costs under $40K for drivers that are able to take advantage of the EV tax credit.

The Mustang Mach-E makes 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. It has about 226 miles of standard driving range. Ford’s first electric vehicle has exciting driving dynamics and decent driving range. It has an aggressive, stylish exterior and a refined interior. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a great small electric SUV, but it isn’t without its issues.

The EV has run into major reliability problems in recent years, causing it to lose Consumer Reports’ stamp of approval. One of the most alarming Mach-E issues is an immobility problem that some owners faced when the vehicle stopped moving completely due to an overheated battery. The electric SUV isn’t the first EV to struggle with battery-related issues and isn’t likely the last.

Price wars can be nightmares for companies but are great for consumers. We’re living in a historic time where automakers are duking it out for pieces of the total electric vehicle market share. For rival automakers to be successful, the companies will have to chip away at Tesla’s market share.

Tesla is the king of the hill, but legacy automakers have billions of dollars and strong reputations to back their EV nameplates. In terms of affordability, there hasn’t been a better time to get a Mustang Mach-E in months. That being said, it’s tough to recommend the EV after it has experienced reliability issues. So, if you were already in the market for a new Mach-E model, the small electric SUV is worth looking into following price reductions. Car and Driver gave it an Editor’s Choice award despite its dependability hiccups.

Ford’s electric vehicle has a huge opportunity to shine. It just has to prove reliable enough for the average consumer.
