Believe it or not, there was once a time when pickup trucks were simple, utilitarian vehicles. And in a world where the average cost of a new truck is $41,105, it may seem like those days are long gone. But, the 2022 Ford Maverick is here to prove otherwise. The base model has a starting price of just $19,995, and for that cost, buyers still get a competent, small truck. While the base Maverick XL may be devoid of luxury features seen on other trucks, it does come with a standard hybrid engine and a hauling capacity of 1,500 pounds. Better yet, it features steel wheels, the hallmark of a basic truck.

The Ford Maverick is a new truck with steel wheels

The new Ford Maverick XL offers a modern hybrid powertrain, but rides on old-school steel wheels.

The history of the steel wheel dates back to the early 20th century. According to The Manufacturer, the steel wheel was patented in 1908 and early versions went into production starting in 1910. Now since then, wheel technology and design have evolved quite a bit. But the Ford Maverick foregoes those complicated wheels in favor of simple and rugged-looking steel wheels.

The steel wheels on the XL hybrid pickup truck make it feel like a basic vehicle. But we feel that they look great. Especially with the variety of paint options that the Maverick has available to it. Of course, for those who want a slightly more modern wheel design, the XLT trim adds aluminum wheels that are the same size as the steelies.

What are the advantages of steel wheels?

Steel wheels come with a couple of advantages, they are more affordable than wheels made with complex materials. Additionally, steel wheels are oftentimes more durable than other wheels. Because of this, they are ideal for handling rugged conditions.

That said, steel wheels are not without their disadvantages. They are heavier than alloy wheels, but for a truck like the Maverick, that is not as much a drawback. And to some, they may have a cheap look. For us, however, we think a truck with steel wheels just looks great.

Should you buy the base Ford Maverick?

It’s not often that the cheaper version of a vehicle offers perks over something that is more expensive. But with the 2022 Ford Maverick, the XL trim is worthy of consideration. The 2022 Maverick XL  comes with a 2.5-liter hybrid engine that delivers notable efficiency. It also features standard front-wheel drive for a comfortable driving experience.

For those who want more power from their small truck, the XL can come outfitted with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as well as all-wheel drive. Even with these options, the steel wheels are still featured. Which is a nice perk for those who want an affordable truck with some old-school feel to it.

Although most drivers may prefer the look of the other wheel options for the Maverick, those who appreciate simplicity will undoubtedly enjoy the standard steel wheels of the XL. We just wish you could equip them to other Ford Maverick models. Of course, there are always aftermarket options for that.
