Ford is a brand that is known for its popular pickup truck models. Whether it be the Ford F-150 or Ford Ranger, Ford has built serious notoriety for offering capable trucks that are ready to get the job done. But, for 2022, the brand introduced a new small pickup that has been selling extremely well. The Maverick sold so well, in fact, that it has outsold the brand’s mid-size truck in Q1 of 2022. So, why did the 2022 Ford Maverick outsell the Ford Ranger?
Despite limited availability, the 2022 Ford Maverick outperforms the Ranger
Even though orders for the Ford Maverick have been paused for customers, that does not appear to deter the popularity of Ford’s small truck. In April of 2022, Ford sold 9,537 Maverick units in comparison to the Ford Ranger’s 5,110 units. According to Ford Authority, these sales bring the Maverick’s current year-to-date sales to 28,782 units.
A couple of factors could go into this Ford small truck sale’s numbers. It is more affordable than the Ranger, and frankly, it’s a new truck. When a new pickup drops from a known truck brand, undoubtedly it will sell well.
Is the Maverick better than the Ranger?
When it comes to being a truck, the Ford Ranger does do a better job. It has more horsepower and a better towing capacity. But, not every pickup truck buyer needs something with serious towing or hauling capability. That fact is reflected in the successful sales of the 2022 Maverick.
Even though the Maverick pickup truck is shorter than the mid-size Ranger, the Ford Maverick does manage to offer more rear headroom and legroom. Although, it can feel a bit cramped for adult passengers.
Should you buy the Ford Ranger or Ford Maverick?
In the debate between the Maverick and Ranger, it truly depends on your specific needs. The Ranger offers more capability through its 2.3-liter turbocharged engine and body-on-frame construction. At the same time, the 2022 Maverick is cheaper and offers a more comfortable ride.
With those factors taken into account, the Ranger is better suited for those looking for a traditional truck experience. Meanwhile, the Ford Maverick truck makes for a good mix of truck and SUV. This, according to MotorTrend, is due in part to its shared platform with the Escape and Ford Bronco Sport.
Want the Ford Maverick? You may have to wait
Buying the Ford Ranger may be easier than purchasing a new Maverick. In early 2022, Ford issued a pause on 2022 Maverick orders for customers. Production was unable to meet demand, which means that Ford is unable to build Maverick trucks as fast as they are being purchased.
You might be able to find a new Maverick available at a dealership, but do not expect to pay the sticker price. Apparently, some dealerships are marking up this Ford small truck at significant rates, which does ruin some of the value proposition. Orders are expected to reopen for the Maverick come in early August of 2022.
