Shopping for a new truck is hard. Shopping for a new heavy-duty truck is even harder. Thankfully, the internet exists. Auto websites often compile lists of the best options for each vehicle segment for a given year, and this year is no different.

Making Carfax’s list of ‘Best Pickup Trucks for Towing in 2020’ multiple times are a plethora of Ford trucks. And it turns out there’s a good reason for that.

Ford trucks overwhelm list of the best heavy-duty trucks

Recently, Carfax released their picks for ‘Best Pickup Trucks for Towing in 2020.’ They split their list up between full-size pickups, heavy-duty pickups, and small or midsize pickups.

In the Best Full-Size Pickup Truck category, the Chevrolet Silverado took the #1 spot, with the Ford F-150 coming in at #2 and the Ram 1500 following at #3. In the Best Small or Midsize Pickup Truck category, Chevrolet came in first place again with the Colorado, the GMC Canyon came in second place, and the Jeep Gladiator came in third place.

But when you’re looking at which truck is best for towing, and you need to haul some serious poundage, then the heavy-duty category is what you’re looking for. In the Best Heavy-Duty or Half-Ton Pickup Truck, the Ford F-450 came in first place, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD and the GMC Sierra 3500HD.

While it’s good to hear that Ford came in first place in the heavy-duty category, it’s more important to note that Ford appeared in the Best Heavy-Duty category two more times: at #5 with the Ford F-350 and at #6 with the Ford F-250. So, out of nine trucks in the category, Ford appeared three times to account for one-third of the whole group.

The Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 are all included

Carfax ranked each category based on the trucks’ towing capacity. The Ford F-450 came in first place for heavy-duty trucks because it has the highest towing capacity with 37,000 lbs. The Silverado and the Sierra that followed both have towing capacities of 35,500 lbs, making the F-450 the obvious winner.

In fifth place was the Ford F-350 with a towing capacity of 21,200 lbs and in sixth place with the F-250 with a towing capacity of 20,000 lbs. Compared to the Ford trucks in the other categories (full-size and small/midsize), the F-150 has a towing capacity of 13,200 lbs and the Ranger has a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. The heavy-duty lineup clearly tops the rest, as well as its competitors.

What makes Ford’s heavy-duty lineup so good?

Simply put, Ford has put its most powerful engines into its heavy-duty lineup. According to Edmunds, the F-450 is powered by a 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine that offers 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque on top of its 37,000 lbs of towing. If you need more power than that, you might as well rent a shipping boat or something.

On top of the crazy amount of towing, Ford’s heavy-duty trucks also come packed with plenty of comfort and convenience features. The FordPass Connect infotainment system comes standard with 4G LTE Wi-Fi service and available wireless smartphone charging.

Automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control also come standard, and other available safety features include collision avoidance and driving assistance.

The ratings ring true: if you’re looking for a truck that can tow an insane amount of weight, then a Ford heavy-duty pickup truck is the right direction to look. The F-450 will cover all of your bases, but the F-350 and the F-250 will also provide plenty of towing.
