The Ford Ranger returned to the market to compete with some of the best midsize trucks on the road. We were hoping for a brand-new generation for the 2023 Ford Ranger midsize truck, but we’ll have to wait one more year. Even so, Ford took inspiration from the F-150 and the Edge to give the Ranger a new look.

The front-end area of the 2023 Ranger midsize truck comes directly from the larger Ford F-150. This brings a bold style to the smaller truck, giving us a pickup that means business. When you open the doors to the cab, you’ll find a large, vertically-oriented infotainment system, which brings a feeling of déjà vu because you’ve seen this same screen in the midsize Ford Edge SUV.

The Ranger has more body styles than competing trucks

Strangely, the Ford Ranger might have inspired GM to simplify things in the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, but the Ford continues to offer two body styles. The Ranger midsize truck offers either a four-door crew cab or an extended cab with two rear half-doors. GM has gone to a single body style for all midsize trucks.

Is the 2023 Ford Ranger a better midsize truck than the Toyota Tacoma?

The EcoBoost engine of the Ford Ranger allows this midsize truck to outperform the Toyota Tacoma in many ways. Even a V6-powered Tacoma is no match for the 7,500-pound towing capacity of the turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain in the Ranger. The Ford truck has better towing, more torque, and higher fuel mileage numbers, making it an overall better truck than the Tacoma.

The Ford Raptor name makes it to the Ranger lineup

Finally, we have the Ford Ranger Raptor in the United States. This has been a sore spot for many truck enthusiasts for a few years. We’ve seen videos of the midsize Raptor truck in Australia and other parts of the world without it being offered here.

The new Ford Raptor version of the 2023 Ranger midsize truck brings the off-road goodies you want for racing across the desert or climbing hills in the forest. This new truck brings a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 392 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. How much do we expect the 2023 Ranger to cost?

Pricing and final specs have not yet been released for the 2023 Ford Ranger midsize truck. That said, early order forms are available for this truck, and we expect it to offer a starting price of around $28,000.

When should we expect a new generation of the Ford Ranger midsize truck?

The next-generation Ford Ranger should arrive in the United States for the 2024 model year. It may be available in other markets for 2023, but those markets will have features we don’t expect to find in North America, like a diesel powertrain.

When the 2024 model arrives, we expect it to include an upgraded powertrain and offer a hybrid option. There might be an electric version by that model year, but the EV Ranger could be one year behind the hybrid.
