Ford Gearing up to Launch Vehicles with Augmented Reality Tech

Ford filed a patent for an augmented reality system that uses a pair of special glasses connected to the driver’s smartphone. Through the synergy, the glasses will display selected data, potentially eliminating the need to check the phone while driving.

Ford published several patents related to augmented reality systems in recent months, according to a report published by Ford Authority. This includes a system for sharing augmented reality content in the car, another system to assist with parking, and an augmented reality weight indicator to make towing safer and easier.

A patent for augmented reality glasses was filed on August 28, 2024, and published on March 5, 2026. The driver/user will be required to wear them and connect them to their personal device to mirror the features the user intends to view while driving.

The system helps maintain a level of privacy in case the driver is uncomfortable displaying the contents of their smartphone on the infotainment screen when other occupants are in the car. Not only that, drivers can even use the augmented reality glasses as a heads-up display (HUD) so they don’t have to take their eyes off the road.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement.

“The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Ford Strengthens Its Tech Ahead of Augmented Reality

That means they can charge devices consuming up to 2.3 kW, such as an e-bike, electric camping tools, a laptop, and many other accessories. The feature was first introduced on Ford’s commercial vehicles and the F-150 Lightning, but now, Capri EV owners can use it through an outlet in the trunk or an adapter plugged directly into the charge port.

Other features on the Capri include a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, and a Trained Park Assist.
