The Ford F-150 Lightning is the Blue Oval’s first fully-electric pickup truck after decades of producing gas-powered models. The Ford F-150 is America’s favorite pickup truck, but many consumers and critics regard the Ram 1500 as the better full-size truck. This poses an issue for the Ford F-150 Lightning because Ram is electrifying its full-size truck as well. Luckily for Ford, the American automaker has one huge advantage over Ram.

Despite what Ford may want you to think, it didn’t produce America’s first-ever fully electric pickup truck. That would have been almost poetic for the American automaker, but another American company has bragging rights.

Electric vehicle startup Rivian mass-produced America’s first electric pickup truck, the 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. The Rivain R1T Launch Edition is a powerful electric pickup truck with amazing off-road capability.

The Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck may not be the first electric truck sold in America, but it still beat most of its major rivals to market. The Ford F-150 Lightning is also much more affordable than the Rivian R1T Launch Edition. Rivian’s Launch Edition electric truck starts at a whopping $85,000. It has incredible performance specs, but it just isn’t a feasible option for most average American drivers. The most affordable R1T is the $67,500 R1T Explore.

The Ford F-150 Lightning has a huge headstart in the race to become the most popular electric pickup truck. According to U.S. News & World Report, the 2024 Ram 1500 EV isn’t likely to arrive until sometime in 2024. The Ford F-150 Lightning will either be on its second or third generation by the time the first gen Ram 1500 EV arrives.

The Ford F-150 Lightning already has the advantage of a longer production history. This means that Ford could work out more software bugs by the time Ram releases its electric truck. The F-150 Lightning will already have a fan base. Affordability will be another huge factor in deciding whether to go with the Ford F-150 Lightning or the Ram 1500 EV.

The Ram 1500 is more expensive than the Ford F-150 Lightning. If the Ram 1500 EV is drastically more expensive than the Ford F-150 Lightning, that could make all the difference when it comes to sales.

The Ram 1500 EV has some catching up to do

The Ram 1500 EV will be playing catch-up when it finally arrives. It still has the potential to become one of the best electric trucks on the market, but will it sell as well as the Ford F-150 Lightning?

It’s much too early to tell, but Ford’s electric pickup truck will introduce many EV truck features that automakers will mimic with their own electric trucks. Timing is incredibly important in the automotive industry. Is the Ram 1500 EV missing its window of opportunity?
