The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for more than 30 years. This popular pickup truck added a hybrid powertrain option for 2021. While the electrified vehicle segment has taken off, Ford F-150 Hybrid sales have plummeted through the third quarter of 2022. We take a look at what’s been happening.

Ford Authority reports that electrified vehicle sales hit a new record in the third quarter of 2022. More than 200,000 electrified vehicles were sold that quarter, and electrified vehicles saw higher sales volume and share growth than the automotive industry. According to Kelley Blue Book, “Electrified vehicles continue to be the darling of the industry, with the growing marketplace and consumer interest now reflected in record sales numbers.”

Tesla has kept the top spot, with 64% of EV sales in Q3. That is still a lower percentage than in the past since new options from other brands have become available. Mercedes-Benz holds the second spot in the all-electric market. Toyota is still in the lead among hybrid vehicles, and almost half of all hybrids sold in the U.S. in 2022 are Toyota vehicles.

Several new hybrid pickup truck options for the model year 2022 include the Ford Maverick Hybrid and the Toyota Tundra Hybrid. However, despite being in the market’s hottest segment, sales for the Ford F-150 Hybrid declined in the third quarter of 2022.

Sales of the Ford F-150 Hybrid have declined

Hybrid sales are not often reported separately from the overall model’s sales, so it can be tough to get a peek into how they’re doing. The Electrified Light-Vehicle Sales Report from Kelley Blue Book gives some insight into the sales data for electrified vehicles.

The report shows that Ford F-150 Hybrid sales are down 41% through the third quarter of 2022. The Ford F-150 Hybrid had sales totaling 14,186 units in the third quarter of 2021 but only 8,379 units in the third quarter of 2022. That’s a drop of 41% when comparing Q3 of the two years. Including the first two quarters of both years makes the drop look smaller. In the first three quarters of 2021, 28,641 units were sold, and in the first three quarters of 2022, there were 26,159 units sold. That’s a decrease in sales of just 8.7%. Despite the drop in sales, the Ford F-150 Hybrid still topped the list as the best-selling hybrid pickup truck in the United States during September 2022.

Ford Authority suggests the significant decline in sales of the F-150 Hybrid could be related to the continuing supply chain problems. Ford recently had more than 40,000 incomplete vehicles waiting for parts at its plants. Across the Ford F-Series, sales dropped 26.64% to 46,338 units during September 2022.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid

The Ford F-150 Hybrid arrived for the model year 2021, providing power along with excellent fuel economy. The hybrid powertrain is one of six engine options for the 2022 Ford F-150, says U.S. News & World Report. The F-150 Hybrid has a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and an electric motor. Together they produce a combined 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque.

All 2022 F-150’s powertrain options are matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, but a 12-inch one is also available. It is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The truck has a Wi-Fi hotspot, multiple USB ports, and Bluetooth.

Other available features include navigation, an 8-speaker or 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, wireless device charging, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, a 12-inch digital instrument gauge, a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, plus push-button start and remote start.

The 2022 F-150 also has eight trim levels, although the hybrid is only available on six of them: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. The F-150 also has multiple appearance and performance packages to pick from and help customize the truck. It has three cab styles, Regular Cab, Super Cab, and SuperCrew. And it has three-bed options, 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, and 8 feet.

The 2022 Ford F-150 has many options for many different buyers. The F-150 Hybrid offers improved fuel economy and good power. While its sales in 2022 through the third quarter have declined, this may reflect a lower stock availability.
