A compact Kia Rio sedan led Ocala, Florida, police on a reckless high-speed chase recently, ending with the little car flipping through a wooden barrier at an apartment complex.
The chaos started around 3:30 p.m. on May 10. Police responded to a disturbance at a Wendy’s on East Silver Springs Boulevard. Witnesses said a man flashed a rifle during the incident.
The driver, 25-year-old Voshon Brown, jumped into the Kia Rio and sped off before officers arrived. He pushed the small sedan far beyond its comfort zone, weaving into oncoming traffic and slamming into another vehicle along the way.
At one point, he crashed the car into a traffic light pole. Officers approached the suspect since the vehicle had heavy front-end damage and seemed undrivable. Despite the crash, though, the suspect backed up and kept going. He plowed through a stop sign and got back on the road.
Brown eventually barreled the Kia Rio straight through a wooden barrier at the Mustang Apartments. The car landed on its roof. He jumped out and took off on foot, still carrying the rifle. An officer chased him down and used a taser to stop him. Police later found the rifle stashed under a nearby parked car.
The Kia Rio, known for fuel economy rather than durability under pressure, clearly wasn’t built for this kind of sprint
Inside the Kia Rio, officers recovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The car didn’t hold up well.
Police confirmed Brown has a felony record, which makes having a firearm illegal for him. After medics treated him for injuries from the crash, authorities booked him into the Marion County Jail. He faces charges including aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, firearm possession by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, and drug-related offenses.
The Kia Rio sure experienced an unexpected and short-lived run as a getaway vehicle, cut down by wild driving.
