It turned out to be a scene that left staff stunned, and security footage doing more than its usual duty. An elderly man used an Ormond Beach, Florida, car wash for something far beyond detailing his vehicle.
The incident unfolded around 3 p.m. on May 17, when the 80-year-old man relieved himself beside his car in the self-vacuuming area of a business on West Granada Boulevard.
According to police, the manager of the car wash called it in after reviewing security footage. After defecating, he then allegedly grabbed a handful of the facility’s detailing towels to wipe himself (and the mess) before tossing everything into the dirty towel bin like it was just another hood and windshield wipe.
Unfortunately for the car wash staff and customers, those towels are part of a regular rotation
Employees unknowingly handled the contaminated towels before realizing what had happened. According to the report, which the Observer shared about, all affected materials were destroyed to prevent any further health risks.
The car wash, like many similar operations in Florida, offers complimentary towels as part of its service package. While the occasional spilled soda or mud-caked floor mat is par for the course, human waste is a whole other gear.
Vandalism charges may be considered, though the report didn’t list any formal citations as of the last update. Whether the incident will lead to policy changes (like camera-monitored towel bins or “no bathroom” signage) remains to be seen.
The car wash business is booming in Florida. The state has more than 1,100 registered locations. Most rely on speed, cleanliness, and convenience. What they don’t expect is customers dropping more than coins into the vacuum bay.
