Florida car dealer gets jail time after using a gun to settle a financing issue
Money makes people do desperate things. It has the power to prompt a Florida car dealer to turn into a carjacker and steal back a vehicle at gunpoint. However, actions have consequences, and the dealer is looking at some serious time for his crime.
A Florida car dealer was sentenced to 8 years after he stole a car back from a delinquent buyer with a gun
A car buyer purchased a 2020 Honda Accord with a salvage title from Guru Auto Sales. Tragically, the 24-year-old Haitian immigrant agreed to pay $30,000 with a 24.22% interest rate over five years. However, that interest rate was only the beginning of the crimes.
The Florida car dealer finalized the purchase and sold the loan to an outside finance company. But the dealer ignored the fine print. Specifically, he neglected the part where the finance company could call back payment if the buyer defaults on either of the first two payments. You might see where this is going.
The buyer failed to make the first payment and the finance company demanded payment. What’s more, the fine print prevented the Florida car dealer from repossessing the vehicle until he paid the finance company.
The clawback prompted the dealer to get desperate. He began surveilling the delinquent buyer. Troublingly, he followed the buyer to work until the two pulled up to a red light. He jumped out of his BMW and approached the buyer, ripping off the temporary license plate paper in the process.
Understandably, the victim took off with the irate car dealer in hot pursuit. After the victim parked the car, the dealer approached and brandished a Smith & Wesson handgun, demanding that the buyer surrender the car.
Fortunately, police arrested the Florida car dealer at a Miami train station, per CBS 12 News. As such, the dealer is likely looking at some serious jail time. After all, while brandishing a firearm is a serious matter, the dealer stalked the buyer and stole the car. Now, the dealer is looking at eight years in prison for the sad, risky maneuver.
