So what’s one to do when all you hear about is the new Koenigsegg when you’re at the racquet club? The poor Ferrari Clienti drivers with special access to the brand’s top supercars have had to deal with vehicles packing (gasp) fewer than 1,000 horses. Well, that injustice has been corrected by the folks at Maranello. Since the LaFerrari appeared as the new brand superpower, the Ferrari FXX K shows up at Abu Dhabi with a power and performance upgrade. There will be no more slumming on Ferrari’s private client tracks.
FXX gone hyper
Calling the FXX K a supercar may not do this piece of bottled lightning justice. The XX designation goes back to the early days of the 21st century when Ferrari unveiled its racing club where a select few members could drive the brand’s most spectacular inventions on private tracks. Club members first took FXX and later 599XX rockets on these runs. The FXX K is the result of engineers tinkering with the LaFerrari hybrid’s 6.3-liter V12 engine and electric motor. (The K refers to the kinetic energy provided by the track car’s recovery system.)
Somehow, the standard 949 horsepower and insane aerodynamics could not stay the course for the FXX K. In the hypercar version, the FXX K gets a power boost to around 1,035 horses along with 664 pounds-feet of torque. Sure, the torque quote is lower than the 715 pounds-feet on tap in the LaFerrari, but the aerodynamics upgrade (about 50% better at 540 kilograms driving 124 miles per hour) should make every FXX K driver happy with the compromise. After all, only a few cars play in this high-stakes performance bracket.
Sizing up Ferrari’s virtual competition
If the Ferrari’s goal in separating from Fiat and Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles is to further distinguish itself further in the ultra-luxury auto market, we’d say the FXX K is a good place to start. There are few cars that could challenge the latest Ferrari in a race, should one ever be possible. (As long as Ferrari continues its control of the client racing program and refuses to sell these cars, there won’t be a chance.)
That doesn’t stop us from imagining a battle of superpowers as if we were playing a really cool board or video game. We’d probably warm up the FXX K by pitting it against the Porsche 918 Spyder. Porsche’s uber-hybrid does its high-stakes business with 887 horsepower and a 2.5-second time lapse from 0 to 60 miles per hour. Once that race got old, it would be time to wheel out the Koenigsegg One:1. The Koenigsegg’s name refers to its absurd 1:1 horsepower-to-kilogram ratio, of which there are about 1,350 of each.
With the One:1 and 918 Spyder out of the way, it would be time to pit the FXX K against the McLaren P1 GTR, the one with 986 horses that hits 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds and runs the quarter-mile in 9.8 seconds. Performance times are still to come on the latest Ferrari that joins the world’s top automotive machines. Once it hits the track on its own, there will be performance times to compare against the elite competition.
On some level, the designation of “supercar” — or even “hypercar” — fails to do these vehicles justice. If Koenigsegg is right that the One:1 is “the world’s first megacar,” maybe that was a goal Ferrari planned to check off the list. In the FXX K, the brand likely has the world’s second.
