There are few things on the road more terrifying or devastating than a wrong-way driver. The horrific consequences of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated were felt three years ago when a promising young student’s life was cut tragically short in a head-on collision. Now, a judge has awarded her grieving family a staggering $56.5 million in a wrongful death lawsuit, though the driver responsible for the crash is still on the run.
The fatal crash took place on February 13, 2023. Beth Buchanan, who was in the second year of her PhD program at the University of Georgia, was simply driving her mother to the Atlanta airport. While traveling on University Parkway in Winder, Georgia, their vehicle was struck head-on by a driver traveling on the wrong side of the roadway.
The violent impact claimed the young student’s life, completely devastating her family, friends, and the university community.
The Fugitive Driver
While the civil court has handed down a massive financial judgment, the driver is yet to be caught. The driver of the offending vehicle, identified as Cesar Raudales Macias, is currently a fugitive on the run.
Authorities have issued multiple active warrants for his arrest. The charges he faces include first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, and a seatbelt violation. The police are still actively searching for Macias, and a reward of up to $15,000 is currently being offered for any information that leads directly to his capture and arrest.

“A Formal, Legal Acknowledgment”
For the family of Beth Buchanan, the $56.5 million judgment isn’t about the money. Instead, it’s about holding the responsible party accountable and officially recognizing the magnitude of their loss. Rob Snyder, an attorney representing the family from the firm Cannella Snyder, spoke on the importance of the judge’s decision.
“This judgment formally recognizes the immense value of Beth’s life and how truly extraordinary she was,” Snyder stated. “This is an important first step towards accountability.”
Beth’s parents, Tim Buchanan and Julie Olson-Buchanan, also released a heartbreaking statement following the ruling.
“This award is largely symbolic and we do not want it to be mistaken for compensation. No amount of money could ever account for the loss of our daughter or fill the void she left behind,” the parents’ statement read. “For us, this judgment is about a formal, legal acknowledgment of the beautiful life that was stolen from her and all those who loved her.”
While the civil suit has concluded, the search for the driver continues. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Cesar Raudales Macias is heavily encouraged to contact local authorities.
