For years now, the Toyota Camry has set the standard for all other family sedans to follow in performance, comfort, and reliability. As the automotive marketplace continues to modernize year after year, we see many cars being released with very few options, keeping the blueprint of a car simple without many powertrain or performance options to confuse customers. Toyota is fully embracing the notion of continuing to offer a lineup of engine options for their Camry sedan.

With all of these powertrain options for the 2023 Camry in mind, experts have come to a consensus on which engine is the best-performing engine for everyday use. This is what you need to know about the powertrain options for the 2023 Toyota Camry, as well as which powertrain experts prefer across the board.

The full Toyota Camry engine lineup

The 2023 Toyota Camry comes with three main engine options. The main powertrain for the 2023 Camry is a 2.5L four-cylinder engine making between 203 and 206 horsepower depending on the trim level. If you get a Toyota Camry with a hybrid powertrain, you will be getting a similar 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid engine making around 208 horsepower. For the sportier trims of the Toyota Camry, there is also an impressive 3.5L V6 engine making 301 horsepower.

For the fully gas-powered Camry models, the four-cylinder and six-cylinder engine options are paired to an 8-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The lone four-cylinder hybrid engine paired with a CVT transmission maximizes fuel economy.

The experts prefer the same engine

According to multiple media outlets, the 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid engine gets the most praise for its reliability, performance, and fuel economy. MotorTrend applauded the hybrid engine’s fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 51 mpg city/53 mpg highway.

Car and Driver also applauded the hybrid powertrain, and despite having a large list of trim levels to choose from, picked the hybrid XLE model as the best Toyota Camry; it offers Lexus-like luxuries at a fraction of the price with some of the best fuel economy.
