Do people buy the most recommended version of the 2022 Ford Maverick? One trim level is more popular than all the others. Every version of the new Ford compact pickup is a viable option, but some are better than others. According to a few experts, the best Maverick trim level is not the most popular. Experts don’t recommend the most popular 2022 Ford Maverick trim.

According to Edmunds, the most popular 2022 Ford Maverick trim is the XL model. Out of three available options, the cheapest is the one people usually buy. In its most affordable form, the Maverick XL costs $21,490 after fees. What makes the base model more popular than the rest?

Choosing the most popular 2022 Ford Maverick gets customers a wide variety of equipment. Items like 17-inch steel wheels, rear under-seat storage compartments, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, and forward collision mitigation are all included. It’s no wonder buyers love the cheapest version of the compact truck. However, according to experts, there’s one trim level that’s a better option.

Car and Driver and Edmunds agree that the 2022 Ford Maverick XLT trim is the best option overall. Compared to the most popular XL base model, it adds more desirable features without breaking the bank. Understandably, the cheapest trim is more popular, but we think it’s worth the upgrade.

C/D says it chooses the XLT trim because the base model “lacks basic creature comforts that most buyers consider necessities, but would be good for use as a work truck.” Choosing the XLT model adds 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, cruise control, a power lock for the tailgate, power exterior mirrors, and more. C/D says the Maverick XLT is more value-oriented than even the cheapest trim.

Next, Edmunds recommends the same XLT model. Customers gain upgraded upholstery, a rear center armrest with cupholders, plus everything C/D loved. That’s a lot of value for a trim level that’s only about $2,000 extra, priced at $23,855. Experts don’t recommend the highest Lariat trim level. In short, it doesn’t provide as much value for the significant jump in price.

Is the Maverick Lariat worth it?

Choosing the Lariat model will cost you $27,355. That’s quite a jump from the recommended XLT trim and even more from the most popular XL base model. With the range-topping Lariat, customers get proximity keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, an upgraded driver information display, etc. Are those features valuable enough for you to pay roughly $4,000 more?

We don’t think so, and neither does Edmunds or Car and Driver. Overall, it’s not very likely you’re too worried about a driver information display or climate control in such a cheap pickup. For those wanting a more luxurious or capable compact truck experience, we’d recommend opting for the Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger, or another more expensive model. For the most part, the XLT model will provide the most bang for your buck.

In conclusion, the best 2022 Ford Maverick trim is the XLT model. However, the most popular version of the compact pickup is the XL base trim. While the XL trim is affordable and has some excellent features, the XLT optimizes the Maverick. With standard features like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, the trim you choose depends on your personal needs. Finding a suitable model can be challenging, but most experts agree it’s the Maverick XLT, not the most popular XL.
