Since its return, the Chevrolet Colorado has been one of the most popular midsize pickup trucks in the market. It offers more options than most others in the class, and it brings along some serious off-road qualities. Until recently, if you wanted a midsize truck with a diesel engine, you had to look to the Colorado and its brand cousin, the GMC Canyon. Toss in the fact that it’s one of the most affordable midsize trucks, and you’d think this was a winner, but you might be wrong.

Where does the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado rank in the truck market?

Depending upon the authority you turn to, the Colorado can rank in the middle to bottom of the pack. Consumer Reports ranks it 7 out of 9 trucks in this class, with only the GMC Canyon and Jeep Gladiator below it. This midsize Chevy truck has a below-average rating when it comes to predicted reliability ratings.

If you can’t rely on your truck to get things done and take you where you want to go, you won’t be very satisfied with it, a category where the Colorado scores even lower.

Turning to another trusted expert, U. S. News and World Report tells us the 2022 Colorado is a truck you can trust. US News also ranks the Chevy Colorado as the second highest-rated truck in the market.

These two opinions are certainly at odds; maybe we should bring in a third.

According to RepairPal, this midsize Chevy truck offers an above-average reliability rating. RepairPal reviews the average cost of repairs, typical frequency, and average severity of the problems to determine the reliability of a vehicle. The Colorado scores at or better than the overall average for trucks in this class in all three categories.

Now that we have two out of three trusted opinions in favor of this Chevrolet pickup let’s look at another factor.

Is the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado affordable?

In the true midsize truck class, the Chevy Colorado is the most affordable truck. The starting price of $25,435 gives you a low price while offering a truck you’ll want to drive. This low price is for the base model, but none of the other trucks start lower. The only way to find a cheaper price is to choose either the Hyundai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick, which are both compact trucks.

If you’re interested in the top-end truck models, the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado can get a bit pricey. The highest price you’ll find, when considering MSRP, is $44,200 for a Colorado ZR2 with a diesel engine. By comparison, the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger both start at higher prices than the Colorado, but their highest trim levels don’t break the $40,000 mark.

Should you buy the Chevy midsize truck?

This depends on which expert you want to listen to for advice. If you take all three that we’ve laid out here, you see that two out of three agree the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a reliable truck to drive. On the other hand, if you only want the opinion of Consumer Reports, you’ll probably look for one of the competing trucks with a higher reliability rating than the Colorado.
