Having a car reach 100,000 miles is definitely something to celebrate. However, maintenance doesn’t end there. After all, these days, many drivers want to keep their vehicles for as long as possible. Because of this, car pros suggest drivers cross a few action items off their lists at this all-important milestone. Recently, TikTok user and mechanic Andy’s Auto Service took to social media to share five tips.

The serpentine belt and other drive belts

This is the first item on Andy’s list of tips for people with cars that reach 100,000 miles. These belts run the water pump, alternator, and even the steering system. Due to how instrumental it is to a vehicle, changing them out after 100,000 miles is great practice if this hasn’t already been done. They’re made of rubber, so they can easily dry out or become cracked over time.

Spark plugs

Andy the mechanic says drivers should change their spark plugs at 100k. Of course, many may have done so before this milestone, but if not, it’s time to. Notably, they ignite fuel to power the engine, which means they’re necessary to keep your car starting up and running smoothly. The good thing is that spark plugs are relatively inexpensive.

A coolant flush

Maintenance pros also know the importance of various flushes, but this isn’t often discussed for coolant. Still, Andy says this is a service that people with high-mileage vehicles need. Often, a professional mechanic won’t just drain and refill the coolant. They also use vacuums, and there may be additives involved. This process helps remove contaminants. This also wades into the discussion on lifetime fluids, which some pros view as myths.

Brake fluid flush

Many people let their cars go this distance without getting a brake fluid flush. However, many mechanics know how detrimental this is to safety. Andy says this isn’t a lifetime fluid, and it’s good practice to change the brake fluid at 100,000 miles, but really, before. This is because it builds up water contamination over time and can increase your stopping distance.

Differential fluid flush

Last on the mechanic’s list is a differential fluid flush for vehicles that reach 100,000 miles. This system and its fluid allow the car to maneuver properly, which means it’s essential for drivers to ensure the maintenance is up-to-date. Drivers should also know that allowing the system to go bad can lead to a costly repair, whereas a flush usually only costs $100 to $200.

Following these tips will not only help propel vehicles to their full potential, but they will also allow for peace of mind.
