As a mid-size pickup truck, the 2022 Nissan Frontier has found renewed interest from consumers. Nissan has finally brought its truck into its third generation, which means this pickup is nearly entirely all-new. The most basic version of the new Frontier has a starting cost of $28,690. Meaning that you might be able to get a mid-size truck for less than $30k. But, what all does the Nissan Frontier S come with?
The 2022 Nissan Frontier S is surprisingly basic
As a truck that costs under $30k, the Nissan Frontier S is fairly basic. But, it is not as bare-bones as Frontiers of the past. If you purchase the base Frontier, you will get a standard 3.8-liter V6 engine. This powerplant makes 310 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque. And, even though the 2022 Frontier S is the base model, you can opt to purchase four-wheel drive.
On the interior, this mid-size pickup comes with cloth seats. But, you can equip it with weather-proof floor mats and other equipment. Of course, adding those things will add to the bottom line of your purchase. As you would expect from a truck, the Frontier S is filled with hard plastics. So don’t think you are getting something luxurious like a Ford F-150 King Ranch.
What kind of tech does the 2022 Frontier have?
In terms of tech, the base Frontier isn’t too stripped down. You get Apple CarPlay which will allow you to mirror your phone on your pickup’s touchscreen. Additionally, for $375, you can get a remote engine start system. And that will come in handy on hot and cold days.
The Frontier S is also available with the optional Technology package. This will add things like adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to outfit this mid-size truck with what’s available to the higher trim levels. But it is nice that Nissan offers the base model active safety features.
Is the Nissan Frontier S a decent truck?
The Frontier S might be the base model of this mid-size truck, but it is still worthy of consideration. For around $30,000, you can get a pickup with a standard V6 engine. You might have to forego on things like leather seating, but the cloth seats should be fairly easy to maintain.
The Frontier S makes for a solid work truck or a pickup for someone who appreciates the simple things. The affordable price tag does not hurt either.
Which Frontier is best?
According to Car and Driver, it might be best to skip the S trim and step up to the Nissan Frontier SV. The SV trim does bring some more to the table, and you can get the king cab variant for only slightly more than the Frontier S.
That said, it is refreshing that a major automotive brand is willing to offer a stripped-down version of a vehicle. Especially when it comes to the Nissan Frontier, which is often seen as a cheaper version of the Toyota Tacoma.
