TikTok creator Chris (@thechristopherpearce) has highlighted the widespread theft of copper wires from electric vehicle charging stations, including Tesla‘s Superchargers, suggesting that they could discourage drivers from switching to EVs.
Copper theft at charging stations has become a menace for many EV owners, especially those who rely on public chargers for their daily commutes. In the world of internal combustion, this is the equivalent of gas stations being unable to dispense gas because someone stole the fuel dispenser.
Chris brings awareness to the problem through a video uploaded by TikTok user K9 Optima, which highlights missing wires from chargers in a Bay Area Tesla Supercharger location. The rate at which this is happening led Chris to speculate on the motive behind the theft, especially since it is now a nationwide problem, according to him. He said:
“This isn’t like some one-off issue. This is happening at hundreds of EV charging stations all over the country.”

One reason behind the alleged theft of copper could be its rising prices, a point that Chris isn’t ruling out. However, he also thinks Tesla haters and people who dislike Elon Musk could be behind the copper wire theft, with the sole motive being hatred. However, there are EV chargers of other brands that have been destroyed by the mischief-makers, which kind of rules out the theory of theft backed by hate.
The most likely motive for the theft is copper, a metal whose prices are expected to increase further due to the rising demand from AI data centers, renewable energy, and EVs. Regardless of the reason, the rising cases of copper theft at EV charging locations could deter potential customers from buying an EV, especially for those who plan to rely solely on it for their travels.
If nothing is done to prevent the theft, it could be a severe blow to the existing EV infrastructure that is expected to grow. Will anything be done about it? Only time will tell.
