Europeans are buying more Jeeps than Teslas
By now, we’ve all seen the gesture Elon Musk made to the crowd during Trump’s inauguration that shocked the world. His “heart going out to [the crowd]” looked an awful lot like a salute associated with the Nazi party, which is obviously and rightfully frowned upon.
Anyway, you get the idea—people are hating on Ol’ Musky right now. So much that people are vandalizing privately owned Teslas to devalue them and hurt Musk’s share values.
Some celebrities, like Sheryl Crow, made it a point to post about selling her Tesla because the company no longer aligned with her values. Well, in Europe, where EVs made up almost 40% of new car sales, Musk’s behavior—both recent and otherwise—is pushing EV buyers to Jeep instead.
Tesla used to be a very popular brand in Europe, however, sales have dropped by a shocking 50.3% over the last year. The stock value has dropped by 1%, too, according to The Autopian.
Jeep has sold thousands more EVs than Tesla
Compared to January of 2024, Tesla has sold just 7,517. On the other end of the spectrum, Jeep sold 9,935 EVs. Even Mazda, who wasn’t a particularly popular car overseas, sold 400 more cars than Tesla.
While the outlet noted the data is just from one month of the year, Tesla has many options to regain buyers and stay afloat. Like creating Cybertruck-esque anticipation for a cheap EV and collecting deposits.
However, if Musk continues to make fascist-like gestures during speeches, buyers may continue to protest by simply not buying Teslas.
Germans are the most upset about Musk
Germans are the most upset about it, considering Musk has a factory in Germany. And, well, we know the country’s unfortunate history and how it ties into Musk’s political antics. Germans hate Nazis probably more than anyone.
In fact, a recent poll revealed 71% of the country’s adults had a negative opinion about him, and 73% felt his involvement in German politics was “unacceptable.”
Since the EU has a large buyer pool for EVs, it’ll be interesting to see if Tesla gets iced out. In America, Musk has enough fan boys to keep his head above water as far as sales go.
