There’s good news and bad news for a majority of Ford trucks and SUVs. The good news is that you might be eligible for a free extended warranty. The bad news is that you’re getting the warranty due to high rates of engine failure. 

Ford trucks and SUVs get extended warranties to cover engine failure 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just closed a 2.5-year probe into 2021 – 2022 Ford trucks and SUVs. Some Lincoln models related to engine failure were also involved in this investigation. 

Models at risk include the Ford F-150, Ford Bronco, Ford Edge, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Aviator models. 

The Office of Defects Investigation was looking into these models because defective intakes valves may cause sudden stops and lead to engine failure in the 2.7- and 3.0-liter EcoBoost engines. Roughly 411,000 or more engines are at risk. 

But because the case is closed, that means Ford isn’t in trouble? Well, Ford actually issued a recall for 90,736 of impacted models. The defective valves have been tested and Ford has been replacing engines in faulty models. 

Plus, Ford is extending warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Therefore, Ford trucks and SUVs have been receiving repairs at no cost to owners. 

The issue is related to high engine temperatures. As they get too hot, the valves become brittle and may fall into the cylinder, causing total failure. 

According to the NHTSA, 1,066 Ford trucks and SUVs have been identified with the valve intake problem. Most of the failures occur within 20,000 miles. 

Ford’s supplier switches to a new metal alloy for future engines to try and permanently solve this issue. Also, Ford and Lincoln dealerships have tested recall vehicles for defective valves.
