It is no secret that the auto industry is getting electrified in the relatively near future. As a result, even performance-oriented carmakers are slowly adapting to this latest change. That’s where the 2022 Maserati Levante Hybrid steps in with its electrified powertrain. Unlike the current model, this new Maserati ditches the base six-cylinder offering for a four-cylinder one.

According to Maserati’s press release, it is the brand’s first electrified SUV. More importantly, however, it is the brand’s second electrified model, following last year’s Ghibli Hybrid. Thankfully, however, this carmaker seems to retain its focus on performance. Despite the new electric system, there are some massive weight savings on offer here.

While the 2022 Maserati Levante Hybrid’s exterior remains relatively unchanged, some massive upgrades are under its hood. The main one being the addition of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is mated to a 48-volt hybrid system which recovers energy under braking and deceleration. This carmaker opted to install the system in the rear of this SUV to retain good weight distribution.

In terms of all-out performance, the Maserati Levante Hybrid remains quite impressive. That’s because its powertrain has a combined output of 330 hp and 331 lb-ft. For context, the standard base model pumps out 345 hp from its six-cylinder engine. Flat out, this electrified SUV will reach 62 mph in six seconds and continue to a top speed of over 150 mph.

Raw power aside, this new mode’s main benefit comes as a result of a diet. The lightest version of the Levante that’s currently available has a claimed curb weight of 4,650 lb. However, this new model reportedly tips the scales at around 4,607 lb.

How efficient is this electrified model?

Unfortunately, we don’t have specific stats surrounding this model’s U.S. fuel consumption figures. However, the carmaker claims the 2022 Maserati Levante Hybrid is “faster than a diesel, more sustainable than diesel or gasoline, and unique in its specific characteristics.” If the Ghibli Hybrid is anything to by, this new model won’t make it to the U.S. market. As a result, we may never know how efficient it truly is.

While this is disappointing for would-be customers in the U.S., the brand could really use a boost in sales. As of writing, this carmaker doesn’t publicly disclose its sales figures for the 2020 and 2021 model years. However, if 2019 is anything to go by, the brand saw a massive dip in sales from 2018, says Automotive News.
