Some towing tests have been done with a gas or diesel truck going against an electric pickup. This doesn’t seem fair, but it does mean we’re seeing how an EV fares against a traditional model. Currently, we have two electric pickup trucks that can tow against each other. The team at The Fast Lane Truck (TFL) put the GMC Hummer EV against the Ford F-150 Lighting to show us which truck performed the best.

What are the challenges faced by these two electric pickup trucks?

Putting two electric trucks against each other on the same course with the same towing load is the best way to understand which EV truck tows the best. We’ve seen the limitations of electric driving range when TFL put the F-150 Lightning against a gas truck. Now, two electric trucks go head to head to see which one tows the load the best.

Because this contest has the Ford F-150 Lightning going against the GMC Hummer EV, the truck with the greatest driving range should come out on top. Of course, other factors are involved in towing, including which truck loses the most driving range during the contest.

Where did TFL take these two EV pickups for the towing contest?

The team at TFL loves to test trucks on the infamous Super Ike Gauntlet and took these two EV pickups to this road. This stretch of highway is an eight-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in Colorado. The road climbs to over 11,000 feet above sea level, offers grades of up to 7%, and climbs 2,000 feet along the route. This is an excellent road to test the towing capabilities of any truck.

The answer to this one question gives you both electric pickup trucks in the contest. The Ford F-150 Lightning offers 300 miles of driving range from the Extended Range battery pack. The Ford also returns up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity.

The GMC Hummer EV provides a greater driving range at 329 miles on a full charge while missing the mark for towing with only 7,500 pounds of max towing capacity.

From what we’ve learned about the electric pickup truck world, most drivers aren’t planning to tow trailers regularly. The GMC Hummer EV isn’t advertised as a work truck but more of an off-road toy that comes with an insane list of features to provide a glorious driving experience. Conversely, the Ford F-150 Lightning is a work truck. This pickup shares the name of the most popular workhorse in the market.  It’s advertised as an electric alternative to the traditional F-150.

Spoiler Alert: The GMC Hummer EV completed the drive that the F-150 Lightning couldn’t, but the TFL team has split feelings regarding which truck they’d rather drive.
