New data names six famous Texas cities as ‘hotspots for drunk driving’
There’s plenty of terrifying data surrounding drunk driving. For instance, deaths from drunk driving have increased 33% since 2019, and a person is likely to drive drunk 80 times on average before they’re arrested, according to Disparti Law Group.
Additionally, around 37 people in America are killed by a drunk driver every day. To make that statistic scarier, Forbes says that equates to one alcohol-influenced driving fatality every 39 minutes. The NHTSA says that around 39% of all fatal crashes are because of a drunk driver.
A new Summit Defense Criminal Lawyers study published this year revealed that Austin, Texas, is the nation’s drunkest city. Out of the study, Austin’s data showed that out of 113 traffic deaths, 83.19% involved a drunk driver.
Researchers determined that by looking at the number of fatal accidents involving drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher, combined with the total number of drunk-driving fatalities and the percentage of binge drinkers over 18.
They also determined that 26.30% of people over 18 tend to be binge drinkers, proving that alcohol abuse is a serious problem for the city of Austin, Texas.
Austin isn’t the only Texas city with a drinking problem
San Antonio is second on the list of 10, with 82% of the city’s fatal traffic accidents involving a drunk driver. Sadly, 19.2% of drivers over 18 were found to be binge drinkers, dramatically increasing the risk of drunk driving.
Third place was another Texas city, El Paso. Out of all the fatal car accidents within city limits, 82.09% of them had something to do with a drunk driver, with Houston close behind at 72.13%.
Fort Worth had the least amount of alcohol-related deaths at 71.93%, with 22.6% of adults categorized as heavy drinkers.
The Lone Star State isn’t alone here
Illinois had a city on the list, too. A drunk driver caused sixty percent of Chicago’s traffic deaths. Missouri proved to have an alcohol problem too, with 63.41% of traffic deaths involving a driver under the influence in Kansas City.
Researchers named Charlotte, North Carolina, their data showing that almost 59% of fatal accidents are caused by a drunk person behind the wheel. While the fatalities were lower than other cities, it had the highest percentage of binge drinkers over 18 at 27.5%.
Denver was also a hotspot for boozed-up drivers, with 59% of traffic deaths being a result of a drunk driver. The city also had a high percentage of binge drinkers over 18 at 26.6%.
