A driver was recently caught on camera cruising down the highway, completely unfazed by a severely flat tire that eventually shredded to pieces.
The video recently went viral on the popular Reddit community r/IdiotsInCars. In the clip, a dark-colored Honda Accord is seen traveling at highway speeds in the middle lane. At first glance, it might look like a normal commute, but a closer look at the front passenger side reveals the car is driving entirely on a blown-out tire.
The person filming the incident can be heard saying, “You think they’d have a tire light on for that… they have a tire light on for that, dude. That’s… wow.”
As the Accord continues down the interstate, seemingly oblivious to the issue, the inevitable happens. Smoke begins to billow from the friction, and the structural integrity of the tire gives out completely. The rubber separates from the wheel, bouncing off the highway and into the shoulder, leaving the driver to ride directly on the bare metal rim.
The video quickly gained traction, racking up over 3,000 upvotes from the community, which is dedicated to highlighting the “lovable idiots who do hilarious, idiot things in their idiot cars.”

What Happens When You Drive on a Flat Tire?
Nothing good, and it gets expensive fast.
Modern vehicles are equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, which triggers a dashboard light when a tire drops significantly below its recommended pressure. While it can be tempting to limp a car to the nearest exit or service station, driving at highway speeds on a completely flat tire is highly dangerous.
This is what could happen if you ignore the warning:
- Wheel Damage: Without the cushion of an inflated tire, the metal rim grinds directly against the asphalt. This bends, cracks, and completely ruins the wheel, turning a simple tire patch into a costly wheel replacement.
- Suspension Stress: Driving on a bare rim sends harsh vibrations and uneven weight distribution through the vehicle, which can damage rotors, brake lines, and suspension components.
- Loss of Control: A blown tire severely limits a vehicle’s handling and braking capabilities, making it a hazard not just to the driver, but to everyone else on the road.
- Dangerous Debris: As seen in the video, a disintegrating tire leaves heavy chunks of rubber (called gators) on the highway, which can smash into the windshields or undercarriages of following vehicles.
From my own personal experience, if you get a flat on the highway, do not panic! Slowly drop your speed, don’t brake heavily, and make your way gently to a safe place to stop.
The driver in the video eventually pulled over after shedding the tire entirely, but the damage was certainly already done. If your tire light comes on, and especially if your car starts vibrating violently, the safest and cheapest option is always to pull over to a safe location and call for a tow or put on the spare.
