The 2011 Hyundai Sonata was rife with problems

While Consumer Reports says the 2011 Hyundai Sonata ranked among its top-rated family sedans, there are plenty of reasons to avoid it. Head over to CarComplaints.com, and you’ll find that this top-rated family sedan earned itself CarComplaints.com’s ‘Avoid Like the Plague’ badge. 

According to CarComplaints.com, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata “has a seriously defective engine that seizes without warning.” Car Complaints.com reports that drivers experienced this issue when they hit the 96,150-mile mark. And to fix it? Well, the fix set drivers back an average of $5,080.

That’s not the only issue with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, either. Owners of this particular Sonata also experienced problems with its steering, electrical systems, interior accessories, body paint, and the list goes on

It’s struggled to satisfy drivers and isn’t all that reliable

As you can imagine, owners of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata haven’t been all that pleased with their purchase. According to Consumer Reports, it scored a one out of five on its overall owner satisfaction scale. Of all the Sonata owners that it surveyed, Consumer Reports found that only 43% of owners would purchase the 2011 model a second time. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata isn’t exactly reliable either. It scored a one out of five overall reliability rating from Consumer Reports. 

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata was recalled multiple times

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata has been recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) several times too. The most recent recall took place in 2018 and, according to the NHTSA, concerned a fuel leak that could increase the risk of a fire. The 2011 model was also recalled for issues with its airbags, seatbelt linkage system, electric power steering assist system, and other things.

Why you should consider one of these alternatives instead 

Fortunately, there are other alternatives available. If you’re in the market for a used sedan, a 2011 Hyundai Sonata isn’t your only option. U.S. News & World Report recommends considering the Mazda6 if “engaging handling is high on your must-have list.” Another option worth considering is the Honda Accord. And if neither of those options tickles your fancy? It’s also worth considering the Subaru Legacy, Nissan Altima, or the Toyota Camry.
