The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana said it received a 911 call around noon on June 1. A caller reported an unresponsive person inside a vehicle that had hit a pole in the Walmart parking lot off West State Road 45. The caller also warned that several dogs inside the car were behaving aggressively.

When deputies arrived, they discovered the man had actually died. They also saw eight dogs inside the car acting in a way that made it nearly impossible to reach the victim safely.

Firefighters stepped in to help, but as they got close, several dogs bolted from the car and charged bystanders and emergency crews

One firefighter and one civilian suffered dog bites. Paramedics took both to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, WTHR shared.

Animal control officers from the county’s Animal Management Division arrived shortly after and managed to capture five of the dogs. They transported them to the Bloomington Animal Shelter. Crews located and secured three more later in the day.

Investigators believe the driver in the Walmart parking lot had been living in the vehicle

They said he had been parked on the west side of the lot regularly and may have suffered a medical emergency before the car accident. Surveillance footage showed the vehicle hit the pole around 8:30 a.m., but no one called 911 until about four hours later.

Detectives and the county coroner are still investigating the driver’s cause of death. So far, police say they don’t suspect foul play. Officers plan to keep patrolling the area to make sure no dogs remain loose.
