Hosun’s tragic accident broke her owners’ hearts. But her miraculous survival wowed an entire nation. Many in Hosun’s village are quick to call the humble dog a “deity.” But in their defense, she was seemingly dead and buried once. And she survived to wag her tail about it.

Hosun’s accident

Kim Sun-hwa will never forget the day her beloved Hosun escaped her yard through the fence. Hosun ran into the street where she was hit by a truck. Kim told South Korean TV, “It broke my heart.”

Kim’s neighbor examined the dog. When they couldn’t feel any heartbeat they buried her down the road from Kim’s house. Kim added, “All I could do was to pray for her.”

The prayers worked. Four days later Kim heard something. That something sounded like Hosun moaning. Her husband rushed outside to search. He found Hosun had made it part way home before collapsing in a nearby ditch. She was covered in mud, but very much alive.

The sight unnerved him. “I got goosebumps all over my head because I thought she was dead. It was really a mystery.”

A “deity” dog’s long road to recovery

The couple immediately took the dog to the vet. She had multiple fractures in her pelvis and the bones of her back legs. But the story of Hosun rising from the grave spread rapidly. A veterinary surgeon contacted the Sun-hwa family and offered to help with the surgery.

Experts believe Hosun was knocked unconscious by the accident. When she finally woke up, she must have clawed her way out of her shallow grave and crawled toward her home. She collapsed into the ditch when she couldn’t crawl any further. Luckily for Hosun, the ditch had enough running water to keep her alive.

Seven years later, Hosun has healed enough to run around the village and her elderly owners can barely keep up. But that doesn’t mean she gets run of the town. Kim learned her lesson and keeps Hosun tied up whenever she’s in the yard. “I am so grateful that she is with us. I hope she lives a happy and healthy life,” Kim said.

Hosun’s vet said “She is a dog that went through two miracles…One is she came back to life from death, and the other is she lives and walks like a normal dog after serious injuries and a big operation.”
