Weight generally hurts electric vehicles, but the GMC Hummer EV is large and in charge. Being heavy doesn’t stop the massive 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck from having a high-speed acceleration and plenty of range.

Does the 2022 GMC Hummer EV have a good range?

Yes, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup truck has a pretty good range. General Motors submitted a preliminary test document to the EPA suggesting that the truck has a 329-mile range on a single charge.

The Hummer EV has 212.7 kWh of usable energy and should achieve 47 MPGe, according to General Motor’s test data. Based on how large and heavy this beast is, it currently has a better range than expected.

This is pretty good compared to rivals. The Ford F-150 Lightning expects to have a 300-mile range on a single charge with the Extended Range pack, and the Rivian R1T has a 315-mile range. Also, the Chevy Silverado EV is working toward a 400-mile range.

How heavy is the Hummer EV?

GM’s document only includes information about the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 model, the only model available at launch. The Ultium battery weighs 2,923 lbs, making the total weight of the Hummer EV come to about 9,063 lbs.

The Hummer’s 212.7 kWh battery pack is much larger than the 131.0-kWH extended range battery pack in the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1 T’s 128.9-kWh lithium-ion battery.

According to Car and Driver, the GMC Hummer EV consumes electricity at 47 MPGe combined, which is 33 percent less than the Rivian’s 70-MPGe rating. So, the electric truck still manages to be thirsty.

But in real-world testing, the Rivian R1T achieved 35 MPGe or half of its combined figure. So, the Hummer EV could do worse as well.

The Hummer EV has a 13:3:1 reduction ratio in the front and a 10:5:1 reduction ratio in the rear. That’s about a 30 percent difference. It probably shifts the primary propulsion source to whichever axle is more efficient during different driving modes and situations.

This weight is a little concerning to us. Will the GMC Hummer EV be too heavy for off-roading? Will it sink in the snow and soft sediments? The Rivian R1T weighs a little over 8,500 lbs, and it’s been doing just fine off-roading in Colorado.

How much power does the Hummer EV have?

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is rated at 983 by the EPA, but they haven’t released an official torque rating. General Motors brags about the Hummer EV having 11,500 lb-ft of torque, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

But the Edition 1 has three motors, and a single motor’s output is listed at 265.5 lb-ft of torque. One motor is in the front, and two are in the rear, and it’s unclear if the one in the front receives more power.

Either way, the Hummer EV is fast. GMC claims it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in three seconds with the Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode. Critics who drive prototypes have been very impressed by its speed. Also, the Hummer EV can tow up to 7,500 lbs.

We will keep an eye on the 2022 Hummer EV to see how it really performs. The EPA should release official ratings soon.
