[Video] A Delaware man’s relative hit him with a truck and robbed him before fleeing
Several witnesses at a Shell gas station in Newark, Delaware say a 38-year-old man was brutally run down and robbed by a man in a truck. The victim was walking away when the driver roared around a corner, struck the man with his truck, exited the vehicle to steal the victim’s wallet, and sped away.
Rebecca Hazeldine, a manager at the Dairy Queen across the street, saw the entire robbery from the store window. Hazeldine, like the police who reviewed the footage, immediately suspected foul play and premeditation.
“[The security footage] shows the guy getting hit, flying. There’s this sound. You can hear him being hit. It’s crazy,” she told FOX 29. “I think the guy must’ve been waiting because he obviously knew [the victim] was there. As soon as he came out of the bathroom and got into the middle of the road, that’s when he came speeding around the corner.”
Soon after the victim was robbed, he was rushed to the hospital where it was reported he sustained serious injuries. A police investigation revealed the driver, John Acre, turned himself in. He also told authorities he was related to the victim.
His change of heart didn’t save him from justice
Even though Acre turned himself in, he was charged with assault, robbery, and likely attempted manslaughter. His bond at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution is $185,000.
Viewers of the outlet’s YouTube video of the coverage were shocked by the “decline of civilization.”
“That’s brutal and cold-hearted! Struck down by a vehicle, then robbed and left battered and bloodied on the side of the road? This better not go unpunished!” writes a viewer.
Many were shocked the initial coverage of the incident protected the driver’s identity.
“It’s kind of stupid to ask the public for help, but then not tell us what the driver looked like,” wrote another.
