To come up with the list of the best midsize SUVs – and all lists that they compile – iSeeCars analyzed data from more than 12 million vehicles. It used information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well as from its own team of data scientists. iSeeCars has conducted Longest-Lasting Cars and 5-Year Depreciation Studies which have helped inform these rankings. While the lists are ranked based on overall score, each vehicle is rated in three major categories: reliability, value retention, and safety. Here’s why the Toyota Highlander and 4Runner both make the list of the Best Midsize SUVs for 2022.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is the Best Midsize SUV for 2022

The 2022 Toyota Highlander ranks first for being the Best Midsize SUV for 2022. This is thanks to its high overall score of 8.9. So what’s involved in the Highlander’s chart-topping rating? It’s a reliability rating of 8.5, a value retention score of 8.2, and a perfect safety score of 10.0.

iSeeCars really likes the Toyota Highlander’s excellent fuel economy of 36 mpg, saying it’s the best in the midsize SUV class. The Highlander also has “legendary reliability” and can seat up to eight people, making this a top choice for anyone who needs a little extra passenger space.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a “rugged” version of the Highlander

iSeeCars says that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is “the Highlander’s more-rugged sibling.” It ranks number three on the list of the Best Midsize SUVs for 2022 and has an overall score of 8.6. The Toyota 4Runner also has a reliability rating of 8.8, a value retention score of 9.0, and a safety rating of 8.0.

One of the things that iSeeCars really likes about the Toyota 4Runner is its off-road appeal. It writes, “With true 4X4 models available and considerable off-road tech, the 4Runner is no poser.” In addition, the 4Runner can tow a considerable amount (5,000 pounds) and also has a great resale value.

The Highlander is slightly cheaper than the 4Runner

The 2022 Toyota Highlander price starts at $35,205 for the base model L. There are a total of six trim levels available, with the Platinum being the most expensive. The 2022 Highlander Platinum price is $50,725.
