When you mix late-night freeway driving, alleged triple-digit speeds, and a Chevrolet Corvette, the outcome is rarely pretty. But early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles County, a terrifying wreck ended with what can only be described as a miracle.
A driver and passenger somehow walked away virtually unscathed after their Corvette launched off the 60 Freeway, barrel-rolled, and slammed directly into a local Maserati dealership.
Midnight Flight Over the 60 Freeway
It took place around 1:45 a.m. on April 15 near the City of Industry.
According to video footage that was published after the awful crash, the Chevy sports car can be seen erratically slicing across several lanes of the 60 Freeway. The driver eventually ran out of real estate, slamming into a guardrail with enough violent force to send the American coupe through the air.
Its final resting place saw it pinned hard against the exterior wall of the City of Industry Maserati showroom down on Gale Avenue.
Adding to the damage caused, the car had completely wiped out a nearby light pole, torn through fencing, and caused substantial damage to the Italian exotic dealership.
Was Street Racing to Blame?
While the California Highway Patrol is currently keeping schtum about specific details, they are officially treating the crash as a property damage incident for now.
One motorist who was sharing the 60 Freeway at the time told reporters that the Corvette appeared to be racing other cars in a street race before losing control.
The anonymous witness claimed the Corvette actually sideswiped their vehicle while blasting past at “well over 110 mph” just moments before it tore through the guardrail.
Amazingly, both people in the car walked away unscathed, with neither suffering serious injuries, according to a CHP spokesperson via KTLA5. The Corvette is very impressive.
But for now, it will be transported Vette has been hauled away, and local building and safety crews have been called in to evaluate the structural integrity of the Maserati dealership.
