Consumer Reports Worst Subcompact SUV Is Also the Most Expensive

Sometimes, an expensive car is worth its hefty price tag, but other times you don’t get what you pay for. The Fiat 500X is a great example. It is not only the most expensive subcompact SUV but also the worst. Here’s a look at the 2022 Fiat 500X and why it’s unsurprisingly the worst choice in its segment.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is the cheapest SUV in the segment

According to Consumer Reports, folks looking to save money may want to consider the Kona. It starts at about $21,300, making it $100 less expensive than the runner-up, the Chevy Trax. This little Hyundai SUV is not a bad car. Consumer Reports actually recommend it. On top of that, the Kona has a couple of powertrain options customers can consider.

The Kona has three traditional engine options and ranges from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that gets 147 hp to a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that gets 276 hp. The standard engine will be slow, as it’ll take the base Kona 11.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. Hyundai also offers an EV version of the Kona, but it’ll start at about $34,000 instead.

The 2022 Fiat 500X is the most expensive and worst SUV option in the class

The Fiat 500X starts at $27,300, making it significantly more costly than the other SUVs in the segment. This Fiat is about $3,000 more expensive than the next most costly subcompact SUV, the Nissan Rogue Sport. According to Consumer Reports, the Fiat is a bad car with a long list of issues.

One of the 500X’s worst aspects is its comfort qualities. Despite the high price tag, it doesn’t seem like Fiat made the 500X very comfortable or even very fast. Consumer Reports wrote that the 500X is noisy, has a stiff ride, and its front seats aren’t well-supported. It only has one engine option. It’s a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that gets 177 hp.

This engine allows the 500X to accelerate at an OK pace, having a tight turning radius. However, Consumer Reports wrote that the Fiat’s transmission is ” neither smooth nor responsive,” its brake pedal is “touchy,” and there are some visibility issues, too. On top of that, the 500X has a low-reliability rating and an even lower owner satisfaction score. This shows that folks who bought one probably regretted their decision.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the best subcompact SUV

And unfortunately for Fiat, the subcompact SUV segment is highly competitive, as there are many great options in the segment right now. According to Consumer Reports, the best option right now is the Subaru Crosstrek. It starts at about $23,000, making it $2,000 more expensive than the cheapest option in the segment, but it’ll be worth its price tag.

According to Consumer Reports, the Crosstrek is a reliable and fuel-efficient workhorse that’s comfortable to be in. It features a good ride quality, easy-to-use controls, and 29 mpg combined with its standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Subaru offers a few other engine options as well, including a more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a PHEV option. The hybrid option will give the Crosstrek 33 mpg combined and 17 miles of battery-only range.
