Consumer Reports: What’s New in Small Pickup Trucks

Small pickup trucks are all the rage these days, and it is clear why Consumer Reports approves of the new phase. Vehicles like the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and even the Nissan Frontier combine the best of both worlds. With SUV-like qualities coupled with an easy-to-maneuver truck bed, small pickup trucks do it all. What are some of the main features of these brand-new trucks?

Consumer Reports went over some new pickup trucks on the market like the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Nissan Frontier.

Consumer Reports says that the 2022 Ford Maverick is probably the most anticipated new release for small pickup trucks. The Maverick happens to share a platform with the Ford Escape SUV and Ford Bronco SUV. It will also be the first pickup to come standard as a hybrid. The Maverick will only be four doors and will get 191 hp with the hybrid four-cylinder engine.

Thus far, the Ford Maverick is expected to get 37 mpg combines along with a range of 500 miles per tank. Another option available for the truck is a 250 hp 2.0L turbo engine that can tow 4,000 pounds. This option also gets the option for all-wheel drive.

The Hyundai Santa Cruz is also a highly-antipated pickup truck

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz leans into the small pickup truck look a little more than the Maverick. In the words of Consumer Reports, “the dramatic lines of the Hyundai Santa Cruz are a departure from the blocky shape of most trucks.” Beyond that, the Santa Cruz is comfortable and smooth. It is versatile enough to offer the benefits of an SUV such as lockable storage, but with a truck bed big enough for most small adventures.

The Santa Cruz gets 281 hp from the turbo engine along with all-wheel drive. This truck has 1,000 pounds on the Maverick, offering a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Consumer Reports says the Santa Cruz is a refined daily driving truck that’s ready for weekend adventures.

Don’t overlook the Nissan Frontier

You read that right, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is back. After 16 years, Nissan is finally taking a stab at redesigning the Frontier, and people are excited about it. The small Nissan pickup truck has a 310 hp V6 engine but no word on towing capacity yet. Consumer Reports found it easy to use and drive, but the steering wheel was lacking in some areas. The backseat didn’t offer too much room, but at least the Frontier is back.

The price of the Nissan Frontier is higher than the other two small pickup truck options and seemed to have the most mixed reviews. However, it is getting into the small truck game early and that’s a good sign.

Price range: $27,840-$37,240

You can’t go wrong with a small pickup truck

If you are even considering a small pickup truck like the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, or Nissan Frontier, you probably know what you are getting into. These trucks won’t replace a full-size or heavy-duty pickup truck, but not all drivers need that. The Ford Maverick will be out soon, while the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Nissan Frontier will follow after.
