Consumer Reports Recommends These 3 Compact Trucks for 2022

For many, compact, or mid-size trucks are the ideal vehicle of choice. There are a range of mid-size pickup trucks on the market today, which makes finding the correct option feel like a difficult task. But, for 2022, Consumer Reports recommends just three compact trucks for buyers. These recommended vehicles should narrow down the list quite a bit. Two of these pickup trucks are from Ford, which is not too surprising. The top pick may come as quite a surprise, as it has not been all that popular with consumers.

Consumer Reports Likes the 2022 Ford Ranger

After the Ford Ranger was discontinued in the United States in 2011, mid-size truck buyers wondered if the legend would ever return. Finally, in 2019, Ford began offering the Ranger again marking the return of this popular vehicle. In 2022, Consumer Reports has ranked the new Ranger third in its list of compact trucks. And that is for good reason.

Despite its lack of a V6 engine, the Ranger appears to have decent enough power for a truck. Consumer Reports also notes that this mid-size vehicle makes a variety of safety equipment standard, which will add to driver confidence. If you are searching for a new compact truck, the Ranger may be the one to get. The 2022 Ford Ranger is even capable of some off-roading with its available FX4 package.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is a small, yet mighty truck

With how popular the new Maverick compact truck has been, it’s really no surprise that it has found itself near the top of Consumer Reports’ list. The Maverick is based on the same platform that the Ford Escape and Ford Bronco Sport ride on, so it offers a fairly comfortable drive. Better yet, it can be had for around $20,000, which makes it an affordable truck.

Additionally, the 2022 Ford Maverick comes standard with a hybrid powertrain. And that is a first in the world of trucks. This Ford does fall short in some ways though. Where the Hyundai Santa Cruz can tow up to 5,000 pounds, the Ford Maverick can only tow 4,000 lbs when properly equipped. Still, it should be enough truck for most drivers who don’t need more capability.

Consumer Reports ranks the 2022 Honda Ridgeline as best

The top pick for Consumer Reports’ favorite compact truck may be a bit of a shock, as it is the 2022 Honda Ridgeline. The Ridgeline has long been a favorite for critics, but traditionally buyers have not felt the same. As it usually comes in last place in terms of sales. This truck does have plenty of redeeming qualities though, like an in-bed audio system and standard V6 engine.

Consumer Reports likes the fact that this compact truck is comfortable to drive while still offering the utility of a truck bed. When it comes to towing, the 2022 Ridgeline can handle up to 5,000 lbs and it can haul up to 1,584 lbs of payload. We feel similar to Consumer Reports in the fact that more shoppers should give this vehicle a chance.
