If you’re shopping for a new midsize hybrid SUV, head to the experts to find the best option. One of the most respected reviewers is Consumer Reports. On its list of best midsize SUVs, only a select few models received the “recommended” label. Consumer Reports only recommends one midsize SUV with a hybrid engine, the 2022 Toyota Highlander.
Consumer Reports recommends 7 midsize SUVs
Only the best models in each vehicle class receive the “recommended” label from Consumer Reports. However, there are plenty to choose from in the midsize SUV segment. From the highest rated 2022 Kia Telluride down to the seventh-place 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, each is a superb choice. Additionally, every midsize SUV has a specific set of engine options or a single engine. There’s only one choice if you’re in the market for a hybrid model.
Only 1 recommended midsize SUV has a hybrid engine
Consumer Reports only recommends one midsize SUV with a hybrid engine. Out of the seven recommended models, six of them only offer a standard, gas-only engine option. However, the 2022 Toyota Highlander is the lone hybrid. Fortunately, it’s also the second-ranked model behind the Telluride overall. With an excellent overall and road-test score, the Highlander is an outstanding midsize SUV with more engine options.
Customers can purchase the Toyota Highlander with one of two engines. First, is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid making 243 horsepower. Next, the 3.5-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower. With either choice, buyers get plenty of power, and options are never bad. Moreover, the V6 is standard, but the hybrid powertrain unlocks with the Hybrid LE model, starting at $40,770.
2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Thankfully, the lone recommended midsize hybrid SUV is also one of the best. Overall, it received a high rating from Consumer Reports. That’s good enough for second place behind the Kia Telluride. Other popular models like the Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-9, and Chevy Traverse are trailing behind it. None of these, however, offer a hybrid powertrain. Even the top-rated Telluride only comes with one engine, a 3.8-liter V6. As a result, its fuel economy is one of its only less-than-stellar attributes, a combined 21 mpg.
Alternatively, the Toyota Highlander gets 22 mpg combined with the V6 engine. Opting for a hybrid model boosts those numbers to 36 city and 35 highway mpg. That’s a pretty significant jump above every other midsize model recommended by Consumer Reports. The highest combined mpg with the recommended label is the Mazda CX-9, which gets 22 mpg using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine.
Consumer Reports only recommends 1 midsize SUV with a hybrid engine
Every midsize SUV Consumer Reports recommends is an excellent option for its own reasons. However, if you’re looking to maximize fuel economy with a hybrid powertrain, there’s only one option. Choosing from the recommended midsize SUVs can be difficult, but the 2022 Toyota Highlander makes it easier. By offering the only hybrid engine of the seven models, deciding is fast and easy.
