Only the best models in each vehicle class receive the “recommended” label from Consumer Reports. However, the expansive luxury midsize segment is filled with excellent options. Each is a superb choice, from the highest-ranked BMW X5 to the eighth-place GMC Acadia. Additionally, with luxury comes value, and with value comes expenses. There’s only one choice if you’re in the market for a luxury midsize SUV for under $40,000.

Only the 2022 GMC Acadia is recommended by Consumer Reports and starts under $40,000 in the luxury midsize SUV class.

Consumer Reports only recommends one luxury midsize SUV that starts under $40,000. Out of the eight recommended models, several of their prices start over $50,000 and some higher than $60,000. However, the 2022 GMC Acadia costs $34,800 for the base model. Moreover, the next cheapest recommended model is the Lexus RX, starting at $45,920. As a result, there’s a massive gap between the Acadia and other recommended models.

Although the 2022 GMC Acadia is the lowest-ranked of the recommended models in its class, it’s an excellent three-row SUV overall. Additionally, it’s not too far behind the class leaders, and it looks even better when comparing prices. Furthermore, CR scored the Acadia well for its road test, driving experience, comfort, ride quality, noise, acceleration, braking, handling, infotainment system, etc. CR loves the GMC SUV’s roomy rear seats, which many similarly-sized SUVs lack.

Fortunately, the most affordable luxury midsize SUV is still loaded with premium features. Although it starts under $40,000, customers get a lot of bang for their buck. According to Edmunds, the three-row SUV comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 228 horsepower. Additionally, tri-zone automatic climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, keyless ignition and entry, five USB ports, and more are standard. Moreover, the base model includes a suite of advanced driver aids, like blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors.

Next, upgrading from the base Acadia SLE to the SLT trim remains more affordable than other options. Starting just over $40,000 at $40,495, the SLT model gains plenty of value. Items like roof rails, a hands-free tailgate, foglights, remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, navigation, a Bose premium audio system, and more enter the Acadia in its SLT form. In addition, the optional 3.6-liter V6 engine is available for this model.
