Only the best models in each vehicle class receive the “recommended” label from Consumer Reports. However, the expansive luxury midsize segment is filled with excellent options. Each is a superb choice, from the highest-ranked BMW X5 to the seventh-place Porsche Cayenne. Additionally, with luxury comes value, and with value comes expenses. There’s only one model to avoid if you’re in the market for a luxury midsize SUV for under $65,000.

Consumer Reports only recommends one luxury midsize SUV that starts over $65,000. Out of the eight recommended models, several of their prices start under $50,000 and some lower than $40,000. However, the 2022 Porsche Cayenne costs $69,000 for the base model. Moreover, the next most expensive recommended model is the BMW X5, starting at $60,600. As a result, there’s a massive gap between the Cayenne and other recommended models.

Although the 2022 Porsche Cayenne is the second lowest-ranked of the recommended models in its class, it’s an excellent SUV overall. Additionally, it’s not too far behind the class leaders, but the price makes it looks far worse. Furthermore, CR scored the Cayenne well for its road test, driving experience, comfort, noise, braking, seat comfort, interior fit and finish, etc. CR loves the Porsche SUV’s comfortable seats, which many comparable SUVs lack.

Fortunately, the most expensive luxury midsize SUV is loaded with premium features, as you’d expect. However, starting over $65,000, customers don’t get as much value from the SUV. According to Edmunds, the base model comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that makes 335 horsepower. Additionally, equipment like a 12.4-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, four USB-C ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, partial leather upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, a power liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, and forward collision mitigation are standard.

Next, upgrading from the entry-level Cayenne to the Platinum Edition costs far more than competitors. Opting for the model that’s one step above the base model costs $80,350, a $10,000 jump from the base Cayenne. Additionally, it’s about $20,000 more expensive than the nearest rival, the BMW X5. However, the X5 scored remarkably well with CR across the board. If you’re able to afford a midsize SUV above $60,000, the X5 is the better option.

Choosing from the recommended midsize SUVs can be difficult, but the 2022 Porsche Cayenne makes it a bit easier.
